What can the most extreme environments in the Universe teach us about the laws of nature? And how do we investigate objects that are millions or billions of light-years away?

In this workshop we plan to give an exciting introduction to astroparticle physics, and how we detect some of the most energetic particles, with energies far outside the range of what we can produce on earth.

In this workshop we will take you from the acceleration of particles to the detection of gamma rays, and introduce you to the physics behind some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. Through interactive lectures, practical exercises and hands-on data analysis, we will give you insights into how astrophysicists turn telescope images into scientific discoveries.

As highlight of the workshop we will take you to get a closer look at the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), one of the leading gamma-ray observatories in the world, located in Namibia.

No previous experience in gamma-ray astronomy is required! Whether you study physics, mathematics, computer science or a related natural science subject, you will have the opportunity to explore how your knowledge and skills can contribute to modern astrophysical research.

But science is about more than data and discoveries. It is also about people, perspectives and collaboration. Throughout the workshop, we will exchange experiences of studying and working in science, discuss academic and career opportunities, and explore what it means to build international research collaborations.

We also want to make space for cultural exchange. If you participate in this workshop you will have the opportunity to give a short 15-minute presentation about your cultural background, traditions, home region, heritage or what science means to you. This is entirely optional though: you are welcome to take part, but there is absolutely no obligation to give a presentation. We do hope that many of you would like to participate to to help us learn from one another, discover new perspectives and build connections beyond our shared interest in science.

What can you look forward to?

  • Discover the extreme Universe: Learn about radiation, particle acceleration, gamma rays and the astrophysical objects that produce them.

  • Get hands-on with real science: Explore astrophysical data, learn analysis techniques and work together to investigate the nature of an unidentified cosmic source.

  • Visit H.E.S.S.: See the telescope array up close and discover how a major international observatory operates.

  • Explore scientific careers: Discuss life as a researcher, develop your scientific communication skills and learn about opportunities for further study and international collaboration.

  • Share knowledge and perspectives: Meet students and researchers from different backgrounds, exchange cultural experiences and discover how different perspectives can enrich science.

Our goal is to create a space where curiosity matters more than prior experience, questions are always welcome, and everyone has something to contribute.

If this has made you curious come join us for this workshop, bring your ideas, and register following the menu on the left.

There is no fee for participation.
