Aim of the course

How can physics and mathematics help us understand living systems?

This intensive one-week mini-course is designed for life scientists interested in the quantitative analysis of living matter. Through a combination of lectures, problem-solving and hands-on computational tutorials, we will explore how simple physical and mathematical ideas can provide powerful insights into biological systems.

We will start with order-of-magnitude estimates and see how surprisingly simple calculations can help address questions ranging from the fidelity of protein translation to how amphibians reach oceanic islands. We will then explore diffusion as biology’s null hypothesis for dynamics, using examples such as ion channels, transcription and morphogen gradients.

From there, we will move on to active matter and phase separation to understand how complex organization emerges in biological systems.

Throughout the course, theoretical concepts will be complemented by hands-on Python tutorials. For most of the models developed on the blackboard, we will also build a corresponding computational model, allowing participants to connect physical intuition with quantitative and computational approaches.

The course is not focused on teaching a particular set of technical skills. Instead, the aim is to develop a way of thinking: how physical and mathematical reasoning can be used to ask—and answer—questions in the life sciences.
