DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Andre Gohr (MPI-CBG\, Scientific Computing Facility)
\n\nR is a comprehensive environment for scientific computing\, data explo
 ration/analysis\, and high-quality visualizations. As a free\, open-source
platform\, R serves as an essential everyday tool across diverse academic
disciplines — ranging from computer science and biology to the social s
ciences. It enables researchers to manipulate data\, execute statistical c
omputations\, and efficiently package their novel analysis tools for peer
distribution.\nThe Scientific Computing Facility invites you to this inter
nal practical course designed to guide beginners through their first steps
in R. The course focuses on the fundamentals of programming in R through
interactive live-coding\; advanced topics such as statistics or package de
velopment are not covered.\nObjectives:\n\nFamiliarize yourself with the b
asics of working with R\, including system documentation navigation\, pack
 age management\, and script execution.\nExecute basic data exploration\, c
overing tabular data ingestion\, fundamental data wrangling\, manipulation
\, and storage.\nApply the basics of R programming\, including variable as
 signment\, data structures\, formal logic\, and program flow control.\nGen
erate standard data visualizations using the built-in base R plotting engi
 ne.\n\n \nLevel: Beginner\nFormat: Interactive live-coding\; Students rep
eat the coding examples on their laptops.\nEligibility & Capacity: Restric
ted to CBG members. Limited to 15 participants.\nPrerequisites:\n\nUnix Sh
ell Proficiency: Familiarity with file system navigation and command-line
software execution.\nText Editor Competency: Basic operational knowledge o
 f a simple text editor (e.g.\, Nano\, Vim\, Gedit\, TextEdit\, but not Wor
d or similar.)\nHardware & Software: A personal laptop with an installatio
n of R.\nPrior Experience: General programming experience is helpful but n
ot essential.\n\n \nThis workshop is adapted from the official Software C
arpentry course Introduction to R and RStudio.\n\nhttps://plan.events.mpg.
