Career orientation is particularly important in the doctoral and postdoc phase. Fundamental decisions have to be taken regarding one’s own future. And this is difficult given the numerous professional fields and career paths in the academic, public and economic sector. Maybe, even an entrepreneurship is possible? 
For a strategic career planning it is helpful to be aware of your competencies, to explore career options and to develop professional skills and experiences. Above all, however, it is important to know what suits you: What are your professional goals, what are your aims and objectives in life and how would you like to achieve them? 
Based on these questions, various strategies for making decisions are conveyed. The participants will engage in self-reflection, highlighting different possibilities in relation to their abilities. They will go through various options and goal-setting processes to find out their goals. 

The workshop encompasses the following topics: 

• My qualification profile: Basics of a strong transferable skill set
• Career perspectives after the postdoc phase: Exploring opportunities within and outside academia
• Structural thinking [Robert Dilts’ logical levels]: Reflecting your values, capability and identity
• Setting goals: Developing clear perspectives by using the SMART method
• My own profile: Defining an individual strategy
• Networking & self-marketing: Extending professional networks
• Career strategies: My next steps 

 

 

Trainer: Dr. Gunnar Seemann, Karlsruhe, did his doctorate in electrical engineering and information technology and then headed a [junior] research group in Karlsruhe and Freiburg for 15 years. Since 2020 he has been employed as a coach and trainer in the Young Investigator Network of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In addition, he works as a freelancer and supports academics in their personality, competence and career development. His received a training as a systemic coach.
