There are difficult questions to answer in preparing for a PhD: How, where, with whom and on what topic to do a doctorate? In getting ready to start, it is important to thoroughly examine your options for action, because you will be bound to the decisions you make for several years.
Yet, if you are well-oriented in the heterogeneous landscape of PhD, you will be able to weigh up the various options and courses available to you in doing a doctorate. In this way, the right key decisions can be made upon entry to a PhD. A structured preparation plan also helps to work out the potential for individual development through the doctoral phase and avoid failures.
In this workshop, participants will clarify their personal goals and work on the various building-blocks for a successful start to their doctorate. The workshop covers the following aspects:

  • The basics of the PhD: An overview of a complex phase
  • Individual doctorates vs. structured programmes: The landscape of the doctorate
  • Good supervision is a must! Searching for and approaching a doctoral supervisor
  • Setting the course: Selecting a topic for the PhD
  • Nothing is possible without money: Financing your PhD
  • Looking ahead: Realistic expectations for the doctorate
  • The PhD jungle: My next steps
