DESCRIPTION:Aim of the course\nHow can physics and mathematics help us und
 erstand living systems?\nThis intensive one-week mini-course is designed f
or life scientists interested in the quantitative analysis of living matte
 r. Through a combination of lectures\, problem-solving and hands-on comput
ational tutorials\, we will explore how simple physical and mathematical i
deas can provide powerful insights into biological systems.\nWe will start
with order-of-magnitude estimates and see how surprisingly simple calcula
tions can help address questions ranging from the fidelity of protein tran
slation to how amphibians reach oceanic islands. We will then explore diff
usion as biology’s null hypothesis for dynamics\, using examples such as
ion channels\, transcription and morphogen gradients.\nFrom there\, we wi
ll move on to active matter and phase separation to understand how complex
organization emerges in biological systems.\nThroughout the course\, theo
retical concepts will be complemented by hands-on Python tutorials. For mo
st of the models developed on the blackboard\, we will also build a corres
ponding computational model\, allowing participants to connect physical in
tuition with quantitative and computational approaches.\nThe course is not
focused on teaching a particular set of technical skills. Instead\, the a
im is to develop a way of thinking: how physical and mathematical reasonin
g can be used to ask—and answer—questions in the life sciences.\nRegis
 tration\nRegistration deadline: September 18\, 2026Participation fee: EUR
400\nPlease note: Places are limited. Participants are expected to dedicat
e their time fully to the course and to attend the entire programme\, with
out planning additional activities during the scheduled course hours.\nCou
 rse schedule: Monday–Friday\, 8:30 am–7:00 pm\n\nhttps://plan.events.m
